Former Mauritanian Foreign Minister: American pressure may enhance the chances of a final settlement of the Sahara issue within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty

Mauritania –Former Mauritanian Foreign Minister, Mohamed Fall Ould Bilal, confirmed that the continuation of the diplomatic momentum led by the United States regarding the Sahara file may open a real horizon for resolving the conflict, especially if American pressure and direct attendance continue until the expected meeting in Washington next May.

An American presence that goes beyond traditional support

Ould Bilal explained, in his reading of the developments of the recent Madrid meetings, that the issue has moved from a state of long stalemate to a stage of serious testing for the parties concerned, in light of direct American involvement that goes beyond the classic support for the United Nations path.

He considered that the continuation of this pressure may lead to a practical approach based on managing and developing the region and investing its resources, instead of being satisfied with fruitless political debates, which is consistent with the Moroccan proposal based on a realistic and lasting political solution within the framework of national sovereignty.

Support a realistic approach to the solution

Observers believe that the American move strengthens the proposal calling for a final settlement based on political realism, especially in light of the growing international support for the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco as a practical solution that preserves the stability of the region and promotes development.

The former Mauritanian minister indicated that any decline in American sponsorship might return the issue to a “framed stalemate,” easing tension without leading to a final solution, which makes the current stage pivotal in the course of the conflict.

Mauritania between neutrality and strategic interest

Regarding Mauritania, Ould Bilal stressed that his country is objectively concerned with the developments of the file due to geographical, security and economic considerations, pointing to the importance of the Gouira region and its extension towards Nouadhibou, as well as the stakes of securing borders and regional stability.

He also called for the development of a Mauritanian approach based on positive neutrality, considering that neutrality in international law is linked to objective conditions and is not declared unilaterally.

These statements come in the context of an escalating diplomatic movement that reflects a shift in the nature of international dealing with the Sahara issue, amid anticipation of the results of the upcoming meetings in Washington regarding the future of the political track.
