Algeria –The increasing spread of electric scooters in Algerian streets has sparked widespread debate between supporters who consider them a practical solution to traffic congestion, and those who warn of the dangers of using them in the absence of a legal framework regulating their movement on public roads.
In this context, the Algerian Organization for the Protection and Guidance of Consumers and those around them called for banning electric scooters from driving on some roads, warning of the repercussions of their use by children and teenagers in normal traffic.
The organization’s national coordinator, Fadi Tamim, said in media statements that the use of electric scooters on public roads that witness the movement of cars, trucks, and bicycles constitutes a growing source of concern, considering that these means are mainly intended for recreational use and are not equipped for use in heavy traffic.
The spokesman pointed out that the absence of a special law regulating the use of electric scooters increases the risk of accidents, calling for the allocation of special paths for them, similar to bicycle lanes, until clear legislation is developed that regulates their use.
For his part, traffic safety specialist Salim Tafrawi considered that electric scooters have become a practical means of transportation for a number of groups, especially students and employees, given the traffic congestion and high transportation costs in Algeria.
He explained that these means remain risky in the absence of laws regulating their movement, pointing out that a large number of their users do not wear basic means of protection such as a protective helmet.
The speaker called for the necessity of establishing urgent legal controls, including setting the legal age for use and regulating traffic on the roads and paths designated for this type of modern means of transportation.
The spread of electric scooters in Algeria coincides with the rise in car prices and the decline in the availability of individual transportation in recent years, in addition to the great congestion in major cities, which has prompted many citizens to search for less expensive and more flexible alternatives for transportation.
