Washington/Tehran –The United States and Iran announced that they had reached an agreement to immediately and comprehensively stop military operations between them on various fronts, in a step described as a major shift in the course of regional tensions, amid broad international welcome and calls to stabilize the ceasefire and engage in detailed negotiations.
The announcement came via Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who confirmed in a post on the “X” platform that a peace agreement had been reached between the two sides, indicating that the official signing would take place next Friday in Switzerland, with the understanding entering into force immediately.
In the same context, US President Donald Trump announced the completion of the agreement, pointing to the lifting of the US blockade on Iranian ports, while Tehran confirmed that the text of the agreement had become final after intense negotiations in which regional mediators participated.
According to the announced data, the agreement stipulates a comprehensive cessation of military operations on all fronts, including areas of tension related to Lebanon, in addition to opening the Strait of Hormuz to international navigation, in a step that observers considered a very important development in global energy security.
At the international level, there were positive reactions, as the European Union called for the establishment of a ceasefire and resorting to peaceful solutions, while international parties praised the role played by Pakistan and Qatar in reaching this agreement.
In this context, European Council President Antonio Costa expressed his hope that the agreement would contribute to ending the war and restoring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, stressing the necessity of “silencing the weapons” and resorting to international law to resolve disputes.
Spain also welcomed the agreement, considering that it opens the door to a comprehensive political settlement, while emphasizing the importance of ensuring the security of maritime navigation in the region.
For its part, Qatar affirmed its support for the agreement, calling for all parties to engage in constructive negotiations, while Pakistan expressed its hope that the understanding would constitute a step towards a lasting and comprehensive peace that enhances regional and international stability
