Algeria – Extinguishing 53 fires in one day reveals great pressure on the prevention system and the weakness of proactive measures.

Algeria –The General Directorate of Civil Protection in Algeria announced the extinguishing of 53 fires that broke out within just 24 hours in forests, agricultural crops, and jungles in several states, a toll that reflects the continued great pressure on intervention teams, and raises questions about the effectiveness of prevention and preemption measures.

Between June 12 and 13, 2026, civil protection teams were able to control all recorded fires, without reporting any active hotspots. However, the repetition of this large number of fires in one day brings to the fore the problem of weak preventive measures rather than just a successful emergency intervention.

The fires included several states, including Chlef, Batna, Tizi Ouzou, and Boumerdes, where fires broke out in forests, agricultural lands, and forests, which required simultaneous interventions in scattered and exhausting field conditions for fire brigades.

In detail, a fire was extinguished in the Kaf Kalla forest in the municipality of Sidi Abdel Rahman in Chlef, and another in the Azm forest in Batna, in addition to a series of fires in Tizi Ouzou, which included Ait Al-Qaid, Ocharf, and Kaf Laqab, in addition to a fire in the Thouara area in Boumerdes.

Despite the success of extinguishing operations, this remarkable frequency of fire outbreaks in a short period of time reflects the limited preventive measures and weak prior control over danger hotspots, and puts the concerned system in front of questions about its readiness to limit the outbreak of fires before they occur, instead of just intervening after they spread.
