In a remarkable shift, Algeria and France announced the reactivation of a high-level security cooperation mechanism, after months of political tension and hard-line statements that characterized the relationship between the two countries.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez confirmed that an agreement had been reached with his Algerian counterpart Said Saioud during an official visit to Algeria, where the meeting also took place with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The agreement includes the resumption of judicial, police and intelligence cooperation.
The move raises questions about the course of the relationship over the past months, especially in light of the escalatory rhetoric that preceded it, at a time when security cooperation remained one of the vital files between Algeria and France, especially in the areas of combating terrorism, immigration, and organized crime.
Observers believe that the resumption of coordination reflects a pragmatic approach imposed by security and regional considerations, in light of increasing challenges that require direct and effective communication channels.
The question remains as to whether this development will mark the beginning of a new phase in bilateral relations, or whether it will remain confined to the security framework without broader political extensions.
