Algeria –A video clip documenting an incident of harassment inside a bus transporting passengers sparked a widespread wave of anger in Algeria, after it spread widely on social media platforms during the past hours, amid demands to intensify the confrontation of the phenomenon of harassment in public spaces and means of transportation.
The video, which was widely circulated, showed a person suspected of being involved in harassing a woman inside the bus, before a passenger intervened to document the incident, which contributed to the clip spreading and sparking widespread interaction among Algerians.
After the video was circulated, the security services affiliated with the Algeria State Security announced the arrest of the suspect, after direct investigations based on the data shown in the circulated recording, under the supervision of the competent prosecution.
According to official data, investigations resulted in identifying the person concerned, who was found to be working as a bus attendant before he was arrested at one of the capital’s transportation stations.
The case caused a widespread wave of condemnation on social media, as activists and human rights activists called for intensifying efforts to combat harassment within transportation and public places, while enhancing the protection of women and tightening the application of relevant laws.
In this context, female association activists confirmed that harassment issues have become an increasing topic of discussion within Algerian society, especially with the spread of digital campaigns calling for exposing harassers and reporting these behaviors via social media sites.
The spread of the video also revived the discussion about the legal framework related to harassment crimes in Algeria, as Algerian law stipulates penalties that include imprisonment and financial fines in cases of harassment and harassment within public spaces, with tougher penalties in cases of recidivism.
