The Libyan Public Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the opening of an investigation into the incident, with procedures to pursue a network suspected of being involved in organizing human smuggling operations from the coast of Tobruk towards Europe.

The same data also indicated that preliminary investigations made it possible to identify a number of people suspected of being linked to smuggling networks, in addition to seizing sums of money believed to be derived from these illegal activities.

In a related context, Libyan Coast Guard teams and Libyan Red Crescent members were able to recover a number of bodies and rescue other migrants, after search and rescue operations that lasted for hours in difficult maritime conditions.

International warnings continue about the growing risks of irregular migration across the Mediterranean, in light of repeated boat sinking incidents and the high number of victims in recent months.

Libya is one of the most prominent crossing points for irregular migrants coming from sub-Saharan African countries, as a large number of them seek to reach Europe via sea journeys described as “dangerous.”
