Nouakchott –
In the context of its move to modernize the infrastructure and strengthen the transportation system, Mauritania announced the signing of an agreement with a specialized Spanish company to prepare a feasibility study on establishing a tram system in the city of Nouadhibou, in a step aimed at exploring more efficient and sustainable urban transportation solutions.
This agreement was signed under the supervision of the Minister of Equipment and Transport, Aly Ould El-Ferk, during an official working visit to Spain, as the project comes within broader efforts to develop the transport sector and keep pace with the economic transformations taking place in major cities in the Kingdom.
This cooperation comes on the sidelines of a business forum hosted by the Tenerife Chamber of Commerce, in the presence of economic actors and representatives of Spanish companies, where the investment opportunities available in Mauritania were highlighted, especially in the fields of infrastructure and transportation.
According to official data, this initiative falls within a bilateral cooperation program based on the results of a high-level meeting held in 2025, and aims to expand economic and technical partnerships between the two countries.
The discussions that brought together Mauritanian officials with their counterparts in the Canary Islands also highlighted the existence of a common trend to enhance cooperation, through exchanging experiences, encouraging investments, and keeping pace with major projects, especially through digital mechanisms dedicated to supporting partnerships.
It is expected that the upcoming study will determine the technical and financial aspects of the tramway project, and the extent of its feasibility of implementation, with the aim of establishing a modern urban transport system that responds to the needs of the city of Nouadhibou and supports its economic dynamism.
