A state of emergency at the largest oil refinery in Libya after clashes broke out near the Al-Zawiya facility

Libya –A state of emergency was declared today, Friday, inside the Zawiya oil refinery in western Libya, following the outbreak of armed clashes near the facility, according to what two engineers told Reuters.

The Zawiya refinery is located about 40 kilometers west of the Libyan capital, Tripoli, and is considered the largest operating oil refinery in the country, with a production capacity of up to 120 thousand barrels per day, making it one of the most prominent strategic facilities in the Libyan energy sector.

According to preliminary data, the clashes took place in the vicinity of the oil facility, which prompted officials to activate emergency measures in anticipation of any risks that might threaten the safety of workers or affect the conduct of production and refining operations.

The Zawiya refinery is linked to the Sharara oil field, the largest oil field in Libya, whose production capacity reaches about 300 thousand barrels per day, which raises the sensitivity of the security situation in the region given the importance of the two facilities to the Libyan economy.

To date, no official details have been issued regarding the nature of the clashes or the parties involved in them, nor has there been any announcement of human losses or material damage inside the refinery.

These developments come at a time when Libya continues to face recurring security challenges that directly affect the oil sector, which represents the country’s main source of revenue.

Observers are monitoring developments in the field situation in Zawiya amid fears of the repercussions of any new security escalation on oil production and energy markets in the region.
