Algeria / Morocco –The Permanent Mission of Morocco to UNESCO revealed new data about what it described as “unacceptable and provocative behavior” issued by people affiliated with the Algerian delegation, during the African Week activities organized on May 20 at the headquarters of the international organization.
The Moroccan mission confirmed, in an official statement issued Thursday, that representatives of Moroccan civil society were subjected to offensive expressions and direct provocations while participating in highlighting Moroccan heritage, culture and identity within cultural events hosted by UNESCO.
The communication indicated that these behaviors have become “systematic and repetitive,” especially after the historic decision adopted by UNESCO on December 10, 2025, to include the Moroccan caftan on the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, a recognition that Rabat considered an international consecration of the authenticity of Moroccan heritage.
The Moroccan mission stressed that Moroccan heritage is “historically documented and internationally recognized,” stressing that attempts at falsification or political exploitation will not change the historical facts or the Moroccans’ connection to their ancient heritage.
Morocco also condemned what it considered attempts to transform spaces of dialogue and cultural cooperation within UNESCO into platforms to serve narrow political agendas and spark sterile controversy that is inconsistent with the values of the international organization.
The Kingdom of Morocco renewed its commitment to protecting African and global heritage and promoting cultural cooperation based on mutual respect and coexistence, calling on UNESCO to enforce respect for its moral and cultural principles away from any political exploitation or manipulation of history.
