New York –Foxboro Stadium in the American city of Boston witnessed an unexpected incident during the match between Iraq and Norway in the 2026 World Cup, after one of the lawn irrigation sprinklers suffered a sudden technical malfunction between halftime, which led to large amounts of water flowing onto the field and causing temporary confusion before the match resumed.
Video clips circulated on social media platforms showed strong water rushing into the Iraqi team’s penalty area, at a time when maintenance teams intervened urgently to control the situation and remove the accumulated water, before the start of the second half without recording any official delay.
According to American media, stadium officials were forced to completely stop the irrigation system after the accident, forcing the two teams to play the second half on a completely dry surface, contrary to what is usually done in modern stadiums that are irrigated before matches to maintain the speed of the ball and the quality of performance.
The incident is of particular importance because it comes at a time when observations are mounting regarding some of the organizational aspects of the 2026 World Cup, as criticism has been raised over the past few days related to long movements between host cities and countries, in addition to complaints about logistical and procedural complications faced by some teams and delegations, in addition to discussions about the readiness of some stadiums whose surfaces were converted from artificial turf to natural grass in response to the conditions of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA).
The incident also revived the debate about the organizers’ ability to avoid technical and logistical failures during the largest edition in the history of the World Cup, especially with the expansion of the tournament and the distribution of its matches between the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Despite the confusion caused by the malfunction, the maintenance teams were able to quickly address the problem, while the official television broadcast of the match did not address the incident, which spread widely on social media.
The Iraqi national team began its participation in the 2026 World Cup with a loss to Norway, 4 goals to one, in the ninth group competitions, which also includes France and Senegal.
