A human rights association talks about preventing Moroccans from visiting their relatives in Algeria despite obtaining visas

Algeria – February 19, 2026

On February 17, 2026, the Oujda-Mughniyeh border crossing witnessed an exceptional opening, which enabled the Algerian authorities to hand over to their Moroccan counterparts 22 people, including two women, who were detained in connection with attempts at irregular migration.

The Moroccan Association for Assisting Migrants in Difficult Situations reported that it accompanied the delivery process, explaining that this batch falls within the files of missing persons, detainees, and immigration candidates that it receives on an ongoing basis, which number more than 500 files, including more than 100 people in the process of deportation.

The association stated, in a statement, that it receives requests on an almost daily basis relating to young people, some of whom have been subjected to preliminary custodial sentences exceeding ten years, noting that it is continuing its efforts to uncover the fate of missing persons, whether the matter concerns Moroccan citizens or Algerian families searching for their relatives.

It also recorded what it described as a “worrying development,” which is the arrest of some Moroccan citizens wishing to visit their relatives in Algeria, despite obtaining visas and bearing their costs. According to the report, they are deported upon their arrival at Algerian airports.

The association renewed its call to hand over the bodies of Moroccans whose families it says are awaiting their return, stressing that it had previously contributed to facilitating similar judicial, administrative and technical procedures, and declaring its intention to continue coordination with national, regional and international institutions to follow up on these files.
