150 security units in the streets of Nouakchott during Ramadan… and a survey reveals: 94% of the population do not feel safe

Nouakchott –The Mauritanian police revealed a field program to regulate traffic during the month of Ramadan, which is based on enhancing security deployment at peak times across various neighborhoods of the capital, Nouakchott.

According to an official statement, the plan relies on mobile patrols with cars and motorcycles, in addition to foot soldiers to secure major axes and internal routes, while mobilizing 150 logistical means to implement the announced measures. A continuous maintenance system is also being implemented throughout the month, with field tracking to evaluate performance and increase readiness.

In parallel with traffic efforts, the issue of daily security remains a matter of discussion among some residents. A non-standard opinion poll that included 105 individuals from the neighborhoods of Dar Al-Naim, Arafat, and Al-Sabkha showed that 94.28% of them did not feel safe, citing factors including limited lighting and the spread of some aspects of crime, compared to 5.71% who expressed their sense of reassurance.

Data indicate that the capital includes six regions with a high population density, with a population of about 392 thousand people out of 958 thousand people distributed among nine regions in Nouakchott.

These measures fall within official efforts to improve traffic flow and enhance security presence during Ramadan, in light of the urban and security challenges experienced by some neighborhoods.
