Tripoli –The United States is moving to reactivate its diplomatic presence in Libya, more than 12 years after closing its embassy in the capital, Tripoli, in a move that reflects Washington’s renewed interest in the Libyan file and strengthening its presence in the region.
The Associated Press revealed that the administration of US President Donald Trump informed Congress of a plan to allocate about $41 million to fund the restart of the US Embassy in Tripoli, which closed its doors in 2014 due to deteriorating security.
According to the agency, the funding will be allocated to strengthen security measures, rehabilitate the diplomatic infrastructure, and develop the American office currently operating in Tripoli, in preparation for the gradual resumption of the embassy’s work until it is fully operational.
The US State Department confirmed that the project falls within a strategy aimed at protecting the security and national interests of the United States, in light of the increasing importance of Libya in the files of regional security, energy, and immigration, in addition to the growing international competition for influence within the country.
This step comes at a time when Libya is witnessing increasing diplomatic movements from several international parties, in light of continuing efforts aimed at supporting political and security stability, and revitalizing international relations with Tripoli.
