Tunisia.. The arrest of people from an international organization supporting the Palestinian cause raises questions about the reasons for the arrest

Tunisia –Sources from an international organization supporting the Palestinian cause announced that the security authorities in Tunisia arrested five organizers of a pro-Palestinian maritime initiative that was preparing to head towards the Gaza Strip during the spring, in a move that sparked reactions and criticism from activists in the humanitarian field.

According to what was reported by the “Global Sumud Flotilla” organization, all five detainees were of Tunisian nationality, and they are: Nabil Chennoufi, Wael Nawar, Sanaa Masahli, Jawaher Shannah, and Muhammad Amin Bannour. The organization added that the reasons for their arrest were not clear in the first hours after the operation, calling on the authorities to provide “immediate clarifications” regarding the circumstances of the arrest.

In a statement, the organization expressed its condemnation of what it described as “the arrest of Tunisian flotilla organizers,” demanding their release. It also considered that these measures, in addition to what it said was “repeated prevention of legal gatherings,” represent a “worrying development” compared to Tunisia’s history of supporting the Palestinian cause.

Activists linked to the initiative indicated that the police prevented them this week from entering the port of Sidi Bou Said near the capital, Tunisia, which is one of the ports from which the initiative was launched last year. They also said that a gathering scheduled to be held on Thursday to prepare for the upcoming mission was canceled by the authorities shortly before its start.

On the other hand, the Tunisian authorities have not yet issued any official comment confirming or denying the arrests reported by the organization.

Last October, activists of the “Global Resilience Fleet” attempted to break the naval blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip by sending humanitarian aid by sea, but the Israeli Navy intercepted the ships at that time, before the participants were arrested and deported.

Last February, the organizers of the initiative announced their intention to launch a new mission towards Gaza from several countries, including Tunisia, with the aim of delivering humanitarian aid to the Strip.

The organization describes these movements as a “peaceful initiative” aimed at drawing attention to the humanitarian situation in Gaza, while other parties confirm that such initiatives collide with security and political restrictions related to the situation in the region.
