Tunisia –The city of Gabes in southern Tunisia witnessed a new popular march to demand the closure of the industrial units of the Tunisian Chemical Complex, amid renewed accusations of causing environmental and health damage to the region.
The march was launched at the call of the “Stop Pollution” movement, where participants raised slogans demanding the dismantling of industrial units that they consider a source of pollution, before heading to the headquarters of the state of Gabes.
These movements came after a series of protests that coincided with the commemoration of World Environment Day, as part of efforts to bring the pollution issue in Gabès back to the forefront of public debate.
In the same context, 22 Tunisian associations and organizations announced their support for the popular movements, considering that the demands of the residents of Gabès are related to the right to a healthy environment, health and fair development, while calling for the implementation of obligations related to the environmental file in the region.
The file of the chemical complex in Gabès is one of the most prominent environmental issues raised in Tunisia for years, in light of the continuing controversy between those calling for the closure of polluting units and those calling for solutions based on reducing emissions and environmental rehabilitation.
