Tunisia is moving to adopt English in teaching scientific subjects starting in middle school

Tunisia – My Press

Tunisia is moving towards introducing the English language more widely into the educational system, through a proposed law that seeks to adopt it as a language for teaching scientific and technological subjects starting from the preparatory stage, in a step that reflects a trend towards enhancing openness to international languages.

According to available data, it is expected that the Education Committee of the House of People’s Representatives will begin discussing this proposal, which stipulates teaching English as the primary language starting from the second year of basic education, with it being adopted as the language of teaching in scientific and technological subjects at the preparatory level.

The text also includes requirements relevant to higher education, as it calls for the adoption of the English language in university majors related to science, technology, medicine, and economics, in a way that keeps pace with the requirements of scientific research and the labor market.

The proposal also stipulates the preparation of a comprehensive national plan to strengthen the teaching of the English language, which includes training professors and teachers at various levels, in addition to supporting the linguistic competencies of executives and employees, and encouraging private initiatives in the field of education and training.

This trend comes in the context of an ongoing discussion about reforming the education system in Tunisia, especially with regard to developing the languages approved for teaching scientific subjects, in line with international transformations and competitive requirements.
