The Smara-Mauritania road emerges as a strategic option amid the risks of transportation to Africa

Mauritania –Concerns are increasing among Moroccan international transport professionals due to the security and logistical challenges facing the movement of Moroccan trucks heading towards a number of African countries, at a time when attention is turning to the new road linking Smara and the Mauritanian border as a strategic project to enhance commercial connectivity and secure transit routes.

According to data circulated in the sector, Moroccan truck drivers face increasing difficulties after crossing the Guerguerat crossing, whether due to the fragile security situation in some Sahel countries or as a result of obstacles related to movement and transit within some African road axes.

The same data indicate that some of the routes extending towards Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger are now posing real challenges to transport professionals, in light of the security unrest in the region, which forces drivers to take additional precautions during their trips towards deep Africa.

Despite these restrictions, Moroccan road transport continues to play a pivotal role in supplying a number of African markets with Moroccan products, especially agricultural materials, medicines and equipment, given its commercial importance and lower cost compared to other means of transport.

On the other hand, professionals are betting on the new road linking the Smara region to the Mauritanian border to relieve pressure on the current axes and enhance the smooth movement of goods and travelers between Morocco and its African depths.

This road project extends over about 93 kilometres, linking the Amkala community in the Smara province to the city of Bir Um Krin within Mauritanian territory, as part of a vision aimed at strengthening the logistical and commercial link in the region.

Observers believe that these workshops fall within the dynamism witnessed in southern Morocco within the framework of the Atlantic Initiative launched by King Mohammed VI, which aims to enhance economic integration with landlocked African countries and develop infrastructure that supports trade exchange.

Professionals also expect that the new road will contribute to improving truck transportation conditions and reducing transit times, in addition to supporting economic exchanges and enhancing the Moroccan commercial presence in African markets.
