The Security Council unanimously extends the mission of the UN mission in Libya after an American-Russian dispute

Libya –

Early this week, the UN Security Council voted unanimously on a resolution to extend the mission of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya until the end of next April, in a step aimed at ensuring the continuation of UN mediation efforts in light of the complex political and security situation that the country is experiencing.

This decision came after a previous postponement, following a dispute within the Security Council between the United States and Russia, which obstructed the approval of the extension during last Thursday’s session.

According to data reported by the French news agency from diplomatic sources, the dispute centered around the leadership of the UN mission, as Russia stipulated the appointment of a new UN envoy to Libya, while the United States defended the continuation of American Stephanie Williams in her duties as head of the mission temporarily.

This extension comes in the context of continued international efforts to support stability in Libya, by keeping pace with the political track and facilitating dialogue between the various parties, with the prospect of reaching a comprehensive settlement of the crisis.
