The International Criminal Court is considering war crimes charges against a former Libyan official

Libya –The International Criminal Court is preparing to hold sessions between May 19 and 21 to consider the evidence presented against former Libyan official Khaled Muhammad Ali Al-Hasri, in the context of a case related to accusations of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity inside Libya.

The organization defending the rights of people around the world said that the upcoming “confirmation of charges” session represents an important step for the victims of serious violations in Libya, as it is the first case in which an accused person appears before the court within the investigations related to the Libyan situation since the file was referred to the court in 2011.

Al-Hasri, a former official in the Deterrence Service to Combat Terrorism and Organized Crime in Tripoli, faces 17 charges, including murder, torture, sexual violence, and forced detention, in addition to other charges related to violations suspected of occurring inside Mitiga prison between the years 2014 and 2020.

According to data contained in the prosecution file, some of the alleged violations affected hundreds of Libyan and foreign detainees.

The International Criminal Court had issued an arrest warrant against Al-Hashari during the year 2025, before the German authorities arrested him and handed him over to the court in December of the same year.

On the other hand, Human Rights Watch criticized what it described as insufficient international cooperation in some files related to the ongoing investigations in Libya, noting the continuing challenges related to the files of justice and accountability inside the country.

The organization also confirmed that a number of Libyan detention centers are still the subject of continued human rights criticism due to detention conditions and reported violations.
