These developments come after several Italian cities, including Bologna, Milan, Naples, and Florence, witnessed widespread protests to demand justice for the deceased. While some marches passed peacefully, Poland witnessed confrontations between demonstrators and security forces, resulting in injuries on both sides.
Circulating video clips showed the Moroccan citizen lying on the ground, handcuffed, screaming for help before losing his movement. This sparked widespread controversy inside and outside Italy, at a time when his family confirms that the deceased was subjected to excessive violence during his arrest, while other accounts indicate that he was in a state of turmoil before the security intervention.
On the political level, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni pledged to reach the truth “with the utmost precision,” stressing the need to determine any potential responsibilities without prejudice or leniency with any party. She also condemned the acts of violence that accompanied some of the protests.
For his part, the Italian Minister of the Interior called for waiting for the results of the investigation, stressing that the law will be applied to everyone without exception, while the Italian judiciary opened a preliminary investigation on charges of manslaughter against the two policemen who participated in the intervention, along with four ambulance personnel, awaiting the results of the autopsy and analysis of police camera recordings and video clips that documented the incident.
