Algeria –The forest fires that broke out in northern Algeria raised questions about the readiness of the prevention and response system, after recording the first death of a volunteer who participated in firefighting operations in the state of Setif, while fires are still burning in a number of states despite harnessing extensive ground and air capabilities.
The Civil Protection announced its intervention to extinguish 139 fires during the past 24 hours, confirming that 120 fires were under control, while 19 active hotspots remained distributed over ten states, amid a heat wave and a significant rise in temperatures.
Despite the participation of specialized aircraft and military helicopters in firefighting operations, the fall of the first victim reflects, according to observers, the magnitude of the challenges that Algeria faces every summer in reducing forest fires, which recur annually, causing increasing human and environmental losses.
The absence of an official tally of the affected areas, and the failure to issue detailed clarifications regarding the circumstances of the volunteer’s death, also raise questions about the level of official communication and crisis management, at a time when demands are increasing to strengthen prevention measures and invest in protecting forests before the fire season.
For years, Algeria has been facing repeated waves of forest fires, the severity of which has been exacerbated by drought and climate change. The authorities have previously indicated on previous occasions that some of the fires were of an intentional nature, with the announcement of the arrest of suspects in a number of cases.
