Suspending sanctions on Iran for 60 days after US talks in Switzerland

The United States announced, Monday, June 23, 2026, the suspension of part of its sanctions imposed on the Iranian oil sector for a period of 60 days, following a first round of talks with Tehran in Switzerland, which was described as laying a “good foundation” for a possible agreement aimed at ending tension and war in the Middle East.

According to what US Vice President J.D. Vance confirmed, the negotiations that took place under the auspices of Qatar and Pakistan resulted in preliminary progress towards reaching a final agreement, while examining the possibility of the return of International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors to Iran, within the framework of new oversight arrangements.

On the other hand, Tehran denied making any new commitments during this round, stressing that the nuclear files have not yet been resolved, despite the continuing technical discussions related to the agreement.

These developments coincided with signs of relative calm in a number of regional hotbeds of tension, especially in Lebanon, in addition to a decline in global oil prices, amid anticipation of the results of the negotiations in the coming weeks.

Data issued by the mediation parties indicate that the two sides agreed on a 60-day road map aimed at establishing the ceasefire and opening coordination channels related to regional security and navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

The initial understandings also stipulated discussing mechanisms for releasing frozen Iranian assets and easing some economic restrictions, in the event that a comprehensive final agreement is reached within the specified period.

It is expected that the technical discussions will continue in the coming days, in light of a clear discrepancy between the American narrative that speaks of tangible progress, and the Iranian position that reduces the extent of the announced understandings.
