Shocking numbers in Libya: mines and remnants of war claim the lives of civilians

Tripoli –The Libyan Center for Mine Action and War Remnants revealed that 175 deaths and 312 injuries were recorded as a result of the explosion of mines and unexploded ordnance in several Libyan regions since May 2020, including 87 children.

These data were presented during the second annual meeting of the Mine Action Support Group, which was held in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, with the participation of Libyan officials, representatives of the United Nations, and international partners.

The participants stressed that the remnants of war still pose a direct threat to civilians despite the ongoing efforts to remove mines and clear the affected areas since the ceasefire agreement in 2020.

According to the data provided, the specialized teams were able to clear about 219 million square meters of land, but several cities, including Tripoli, Misrata, Sirte, Benghazi, and Sabha, still face the dangers of explosive ordnance.

Participants also pointed out the challenges that hinder mine clearance operations, especially weak funding, limited technical capabilities, and difficulty reaching some areas.

The meeting stressed the importance of strengthening international cooperation and supporting the competent Libyan institutions, in addition to intensifying awareness and prevention programs to reduce further casualties, especially among children.
