Nouakchott –Mauritanian sources reported, on Wednesday, that the Mauritanian authorities prevented an American human rights delegation affiliated with two organizations active in the field of defending human rights and combating slavery from entering the country, before its members were returned from Nouakchott International Airport.
According to available data, the delegation intended to visit the family of the late human rights activist, Abu Bakr Ould Masoud, the former head of the “Help the Obeid” organization, who died last month, in addition to holding meetings with a number of Mauritanian human rights activists.
The delegation includes six activists belonging to the Abolition Institute and Rambo Butch organizations, known for their activity in human rights and anti-slavery issues.
According to the same sources, the Mauritanian authorities had previously allowed delegations from the two organizations to visit the country in 2021 without recording any obstacles, while they had prevented a similar delegation from entering in 2017.
The “Emancipation Commission” organization is headed by American human rights activist Shan Tanner, known for his closeness to former US President Mubarak Obama, while the “Rambo Butch” organization was founded by the late American leader Jesse Jackson.
To date, the Mauritanian authorities have not issued official clarifications regarding the reasons for preventing the delegation from entering Mauritanian territory.
