Mauritania moves to protect minors from electronic cigarettes… demands to tighten control and raise taxes

Nouakchott –The Mauritanian League to Combat Tuberculosis and AIDS organized a foot march in the capital, Nouakchott, towards the Ministry of Health, to demand strengthening the protection of minors from the dangers of e-cigarettes and tobacco products.

This initiative came at the conclusion of the activities of World No Tobacco Day, which was organized this year under the slogan: “Exposing the falsehood of temptations… We fight addiction to tobacco and nicotine.”

The participants submitted a memorandum to the Ministry of Health that included a number of demands, most notably tightening the application of anti-tobacco laws, enhancing the protection of minors and public places from smoking, intensifying awareness campaigns, in addition to raising taxes on tobacco products and electronic cigarettes to reduce their consumption.

In this context, the association’s financial officer, Boubacar Djibe Bah, warned of the growing use of e-cigarettes and tobacco products among teenagers, noting that smoking causes the death of about eight million people annually worldwide.

The association stressed that protecting minors from the dangers of addiction requires coordination between health and educational authorities and civil society organizations, in order to enhance prevention and ensure a healthy and safe environment for rising generations.
