Mauritania closes its doors to an American human rights delegation amid widespread questions

Nouakchott –The Mauritanian authorities prevented an American human rights delegation from entering the country after refusing to grant its members entry visas, according to what was confirmed by identical human rights and media data.

The delegation, which includes activists affiliated with American human rights organizations, intended to visit the capital, Nouakchott, to offer condolences to the family of the late human rights activist, Abu Bakr Ould Masoud, in addition to holding meetings with human rights and civil rights activists regarding a number of human rights files in Mauritania.

According to the same sources, only one member was able to enter the country because he holds Mauritanian citizenship in addition to the American one, while the rest of the delegation members were unable to enter Mauritanian territory after their visa applications were rejected.

The decision sparked reactions within Mauritanian human rights circles, as civil organizations expressed their surprise at preventing the delegation from making a visit that they described as “humanitarian and legal,” while opposition parties considered that the move reflects continued tension in the authorities’ relationship with some international organizations concerned with issues of freedom and human rights.

This development comes at a time when Mauritania is witnessing continuous follow-up by international human rights bodies, especially on issues related to anti-slavery and civil rights.
