Libya.. The tragedies of clandestine migration escalate after hundreds of migrants drowned and went missing in the Mediterranean Sea

Tripoli –The irregular migration crisis across the Libyan coast is worsening in light of the increasing number of missing and drowned migrants trying to cross to Europe, amid the continued activity of human smuggling networks and the recurrence of “death boat” incidents in the Mediterranean Sea.

International data indicate that more than a thousand deaths or drownings have been recorded in the Mediterranean since the beginning of this year, after the victims set off from Libyan territory on rickety boats towards the European coasts.

In the latest rescue operations, the authorities in the city of Tobruk, eastern Libya, were able to return 68 irregular migrants to land after their boat was intercepted at sea, where they were facing difficult humanitarian conditions following a dangerous sea journey.

The Libyan Red Crescent teams announced their intervention to provide medical and humanitarian aid to the migrants upon their arrival, at a time when warnings continue of increasing disasters linked to clandestine migration from Libya.

Human rights organizations and activists accuse human trafficking networks of exploiting the fragility of the security and social conditions to organize migration trips towards Europe, in exchange for large sums of money, via sea routes described as among the most dangerous in the world.

The recent drowning incidents have also brought to light the conditions of thousands of migrants stranded inside Libya, in light of repeated talk about the existence of unofficial shelter and detention centers to which some migrants are transferred after being intercepted at sea.

The tragedy extended to a number of Arab and African families who lost contact with their children during migration journeys, while searches and identification of bodies that are washed up on the Libyan and Tunisian coasts continue from time to time.

International estimates confirm that Libya is still one of the main crossing points for irregular migrants towards Europe, with hundreds of thousands of migrants and refugees inside its territory waiting for an opportunity to cross.
