Libya is moving towards shale gas exploration in partnership with the American “Chevron”.

Tripoli –The National Oil Corporation of Libya announced that it has entered into an initial partnership with the American Chevron, in order to launch technical studies related to the Libyan potential in the field of unconventional oil and gas, especially shale gas.

According to data issued by the corporation, the new agreement aims to evaluate the energy resources of a number of major sedimentary basins, in a step that reflects Libya’s trend towards expanding areas of investment and exploration within the energy sector.

The head of the Foundation, Masoud Suleiman Musa, indicated that the anticipated studies will include the Sirte, Murzuq and Ghadames basins, which are considered among the most prominent areas rich in energy resources in the country.

Initial estimates circulating also revealed the presence of large reserves that may reach about 123 trillion cubic feet of gas, in addition to approximately 18 billion barrels of oil, which may give a new impetus to the Libyan energy sector.

This trend comes as Libya seeks to strengthen its presence within the global energy market and attract more major international companies to invest in exploration and development projects.

Observers believe that cooperation with Chevron may open the door to a new phase in exploiting unconventional resources in Libya, especially with the increasing global interest in natural gas as a strategic source of energy.
