Libya – My Press
In light of the accelerating military escalation taking place in the region, Libya emerged with two parallel official positions: The Prime Minister of the National Unity Government, Abdul Hamid Al-Dabaiba, affirmed his full solidarity with the State of Qatar, while the government appointed by the House of Representatives, headed by Osama Hammad, warned of serious repercussions that may threaten regional security.
Al-Dabaiba made a phone call to the Emir of the State of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, during which he expressed Libya’s support for Qatar’s leadership and people, and its rejection of any infringement on its sovereignty, against the backdrop of the recent military events that affected a number of countries in the region.
The Prime Minister of the Unity Government stressed that respect for the sovereignty of states represents the cornerstone of Arab relations, calling for containing the escalation and giving priority to political and diplomatic solutions to avoid widening the scope of the confrontation, stressing that the stability of the Gulf states is directly reflected in the stability of the entire region.
In a separate statement, the unity government condemned what it described as the Israeli military escalation against Iran, warning of the dangers of the situation sliding into a broader confrontation, and affirming its rejection of any violation of the sovereignty of Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan.
On the other hand, the government appointed by the House of Representatives issued a lengthy statement in which it expressed its deep concern about the recent developments, considering that the continuation of military operations represents a direct threat to regional and international peace.
Hammad’s government affirmed its solidarity with the Gulf countries that were subjected to attacks, calling on the UN Security Council to assume its responsibilities to prevent the situation from sliding towards more dangerous levels, while emphasizing that dialogue remains the best option to address crises.
On the ground, regional tensions were reflected in Libyan air traffic, as an OIA plane returned to Mitiga Airport after taking off due to tense conditions around Dubai International Airport. African Airlines also announced the suspension of its flights to and from Amman International Airport until further notice, as part of precautionary measures to ensure the safety of travelers.
These developments reflect the Libyan parties’ keenness to declare clear solidarity with the Gulf states, in parallel with the call to stop the escalation and give priority to the political solution, in a highly sensitive regional context in which political and security calculations overlap.
