Libya –The Libyan Criminal Investigation Service announced the arrest of a woman in the city of Derna, eastern Libya, on suspicion of her involvement in an incident that led to the death of an infant a few hours after his birth, in an incident that sparked widespread interaction within Libyan circles.
The agency explained, in an official statement, that the person concerned admitted to giving birth to a baby inside her home, noting that the pregnancy was outside of marriage. According to preliminary data, the infant died shortly after being placed in a place designated for waste, as the competent authorities began their investigations to accurately determine the circumstances of the incident.
Referral to the Public Prosecution
The same source confirmed that the necessary legal measures had been taken against the suspect, along with the person suspected of being the child’s father, as they were referred to the competent public prosecution to complete investigations in accordance with the law.
The statement described the incident as “painful,” stressing that the authorities will deal with it according to applicable legal procedures, while respecting the presumption of innocence until final judicial rulings are issued.
Widespread interaction and calls to protect children
The incident sparked a wave of condemnation on social media, where a number of activists expressed their shock, demanding that the law be implemented and that mechanisms for protecting newborns be strengthened.
Human rights reports indicate that newborn children are considered one of the most vulnerable groups, especially in complex social contexts, which requires intensifying awareness programs, social and psychological support, and strengthening the legal protection system for their benefit.
Investigations are still underway to uncover all the circumstances of the case and determine the legal responsibilities associated with it.
