Kais Saied dismisses the Tunisian Minister of Energy, hours before voting on major renewable energy projects

Tunisia –Tunisian President Kais Saied dismissed Energy Minister Fatima Thabet, in a move that coincides with the Tunisian Parliament’s discussion of major investment projects in the field of renewable energies.

The Tunisian presidency announced the appointment of Salah al-Din al-Zouari, Minister of Equipment and Housing, to temporarily supervise the Ministry of Energy, without providing official clarifications regarding the reasons for the exemption.

This decision coincided with Parliament’s preparation to vote on new energy projects with a total capacity of 600 megawatts, with investments amounting to approximately 500 million euros, as part of Tunisia’s move towards expanding clean energy production and reducing dependence on traditional energy sources.

These projects sparked a political debate within the country, after political and parliamentary parties expressed their reservations about the method of managing the contracts associated with them, especially with regard to awarding part of them to foreign companies.

Some voices also criticized the exclusion of the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company from a number of these projects, considering that the energy sector represents a strategic file linked to the economic sovereignty and energy security of the country.

This controversy comes at a time when Tunisia faces increasing challenges related to energy and the cost of production, while the authorities seek to accelerate the transition towards renewable energies and attract new investments in the sector.

Observers believe that the timing of the dismissal, coinciding with the discussion of these projects in Parliament, heightened the political questions regarding the background of the decision and its repercussions on the future of the energy sector in Tunisia.
