TehranOn Saturday, Iran warned the United Kingdom and France against any military movement in the Strait of Hormuz, after the two countries announced their readiness to participate in a multinational force to support freedom of navigation in this vital sea lane.
The warning came from the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, who confirmed, through a post on the “X” platform, that Iran considers itself the party responsible for ensuring the security of the Strait of Hormuz, stressing that the security of the Strait “falls upon the responsibility of the countries overlooking it.”
The Iranian position comes after a joint statement issued by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, in which they affirmed that the Strait of Hormuz represents an essential artery for the global economy, and that the Sultanate of Oman agreed to work with London and Paris to ensure the safety of navigation within its territorial waters.
The two sides also announced their readiness to deploy a multinational military force to support freedom of navigation in the Strait, while affirming their commitment to maintaining regional stability and respecting the sovereignty of states and international law.
This escalation comes at a time when maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz is still gradually regaining its activity, following the recent military tensions in the region, which directly affected the movement of ships and global energy markets.
Observers believe that the mutual positions reflect the continued security sensitivity associated with the Strait of Hormuz, which is one of the most important sea lanes for transporting oil and gas in the world, in light of continuing international efforts to ensure the smooth flow of navigation and avoid any new escalation.
