Floods in southern Libya paralyze communications. Ghat and Tahala are out of coverage due to extensive damage to the fiber optic network

Tripoli –The wave of floods that witnessed southern Libya in recent days led to the disruption of communications and Internet services in the cities of Ghat and Tahala, after the floods caused damage to the infrastructure of digital connectivity networks.

Local authorities in the municipality of Ghat reported that the strong water flows that swept through a number of road axes between Ghat and Tahala caused damage to the fiber optic cable, causing a loss of connection to telephone networks and Internet services throughout the region.

The technical teams of the “Hatif Libya” company were quick to intervene in order to repair the recorded defects, as maintenance operations continue amid complex field conditions resulting from the continuing effects of weather conditions and the difficulty of reaching some of the affected sites.

The concerned authorities confirmed that the restoration of services remains dependent on the completion of the ongoing repair work, with the expectation that the network will return to work as soon as the various technical damages are completed.

In the face of the repercussions of the floods, the Prime Minister of the National Unity Government, Abdul Hamid Dabaiba, issued urgent directives to various government sectors to strengthen the field response in the affected areas, especially in the cities of Ghat and Tahala.

The measures taken include providing the necessary assistance to affected families, supporting families who were forced to leave their homes, in addition to mobilizing logistical resources to drain the accumulated water within residential neighborhoods and reduce the risks associated with floods.

Health interventions were also strengthened by mobilizing medical teams and ambulances and providing the necessary treatment supplies, at a time when the authorities continue to assess the extent of losses and monitor urgent needs to ensure that the situation returns to normal.
