Libya –Russia accused the authorities in Ukraine of being behind an attack targeting a liquefied natural gas tanker off the Libyan coast, using naval drones on Tuesday evening, according to what Russian official authorities announced.
The Russian Ministry of Transport reported that the attack targeted the tanker “Arctic Metagas,” noting that the operation was carried out via sea drones launched from the Libyan coast. It said that the ship was loaded with liquefied natural gas and had previously left the port of Murmansk in northern Russia.
Russian sources confirmed that all 30 members of the ship’s crew survived the accident, while an investigation was opened to determine the circumstances of the attack.
On the other hand, the Libyan Ports and Maritime Transport Authority announced that the tanker sank about 120 nautical miles north of the port of Sirte, after its crew issued a distress call after it was exposed to “sudden explosions” followed by a large fire.
The same authority explained that the explosions led to a massive fire breaking out on the ship, causing it to sink completely at sea.
This development comes in light of continuing military tensions between Russia and Ukraine, amid fears of the expansion of indirect confrontations into new maritime areas outside the traditional theater of operations.
