An unprecedented energy project… a direct electrical connection between Morocco and Mauritania

Mauritania –Field studies have been launched for the project to establish a high-voltage electric line linking Morocco and Mauritania, in a step considered the first of its kind to establish a direct connection between the two countries’ electrical networks and enhance energy cooperation between them.

The project aims to establish a 400-kilovolt electricity line linking the city of Dakhla in southern Morocco to the city of Bolnoir in Mauritania, with the aim of developing the infrastructure for energy transmission and enhancing the security of electricity supply in the region.

The launch of these studies comes within the framework of activating the bilateral agreements between Rabat and Nouakchott in the field of energy, which were reached during official discussions between government officials from the two countries, where the two parties agreed to study the possibility of establishing a high-voltage electric line linking the two national networks.

It is expected that this project will contribute to enhancing energy integration between the two countries and developing energy projects, especially in the southern regions of the Kingdom, in addition to supporting renewable energy projects that Morocco is working to expand in the region.

It is also expected that this connection will constitute a strategic step towards expanding Morocco’s electrical interconnection network towards sub-Saharan Africa, benefiting from the experience that the Kingdom has accumulated in electrical interconnection projects with a number of neighboring countries.

Observers believe that the electrical interconnection project between Dakhla and Boulognoir falls within a broader vision to enhance economic cooperation and energy infrastructure between Morocco and Mauritania, and open new horizons for energy exchange and support development in the region.
