An accelerating Moroccan-Mauritanian rapprochement enhances economic cooperation and raises concerns in Algeria

Nouakchott –Morocco and Mauritania continue to strengthen their bilateral relations through accelerated political and economic moves, in a step that paves the way for the establishment of a new strategic partnership between the two countries in a number of vital sectors.

In this context, a Moroccan delegation led by the Minister Delegate in charge of Investment, Preparation and Public Policy Evaluation, Karim Zidane, held discussions with Mauritanian officials and economic actors in the capital, Nouakchott, focusing on developing cooperation in the fields of investment, infrastructure, energy and logistics services.

According to circulated data, the two countries are seeking to bring about a qualitative shift in bilateral relations, in line with the directives led by King Mohammed VI and Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Sheikh Al-Ghazouani, with the aim of enhancing economic exchanges and improving the business climate between Rabat and Nouakchott.

Observers believe that this rapprochement reflects Mauritania’s awareness of the importance of partnership with Morocco, given Moroccan experience in the fields of investment, ports and infrastructure, in addition to Nouakchott’s strategic location as a gateway to West Africa.

This development also comes in light of increasing regional challenges in the Sahel region, which prompts the two countries to expand economic, trade and security coordination.

On the other hand, this rapprochement raises Algeria’s concern, especially with growing indicators of Mauritanian openness to the Moroccan proposal related to the autonomy initiative as a solution to the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
