Algeria –At a time when several Arab countries were quick to announce official positions denouncing the attacks attributed to Iran, which in recent days targeted facilities and sites within a number of Arab Gulf states, the absence of a direct Algerian position condemning these attacks became apparent, which revived the discussion about the directions of Algerian diplomacy in dealing with the escalating regional tensions.
Over the past few days, the region has witnessed a series of security developments, including attacks that targeted sites within Gulf countries, including Kuwait and Bahrain, according to what was reported by media and international reports, which prompted a number of Arab capitals to express their solidarity with the affected countries and affirm their rejection of any threat to their security and sovereignty.
In this context, several Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia, the Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Egypt and Jordan, issued official statements confirming their condemnation of the attacks and their support for the targeted countries, and similar positions were issued by Arab regional institutions and bodies.
Morocco has also previously expressed on previous occasions its condemnation of targeting civilian and vital installations in the Gulf states, stressing its support for the security and stability of the region and its rejection of any actions that would threaten the safety of civilians or strategic infrastructure.
On the other hand, the Algerian authorities have not, to date, issued an official position that includes a direct condemnation of the recent attacks that targeted some Gulf countries, while Algeria, during previous episodes of regional tension, was content with calling for calm, avoiding escalation, and maintaining regional stability.
Observers believe that this position differs from the approach adopted by several Arab countries that chose to announce clear positions in support of the targeted countries, while Algeria usually prefers to adopt a discourse calling for dialogue and diplomatic solutions in regional crises.
This development brings to the forefront questions about Algeria’s position within the current regional balances, especially in light of the rapid transformations taking place in the Middle East region, and the continuing tension between a number of active forces in the region.
All eyes remain on the official positions expected in the coming days, to see whether Algeria will issue a clearer position on these developments, or will continue to adhere to the option of calling for calm and avoiding escalation.
