Algeria is using the gas card to influence Spain’s position on the Moroccan Sahara… and the limited results raise questions

Madrid/Algeria –In light of the rapid transformations taking placeEnergy marketGlobally, indications have emerged that Algeria is using gas supplies as a tool with dimensions that go beyond the economic aspect, in an attempt to influence the positions of some European countries, led by Spain, regarding the issue of the Moroccan Sahara.

According to media data, Algeria worked to strengthen its presence inSpanish marketTaking advantage of the geographical proximity and the level of relative dependence on its supplies, in the context of its endeavor to consolidate its position as a major energy supplier, which falls within the use of the energy card as a means of diplomatic influence.

However, this approach clashed, according to the same data, with a clear political position from Madrid, which renewed its support for the autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty, which contributed to the tension in bilateral relations, which was translated into measures including the suspension of the Treaty of Friendship and Good Neighborliness and the restriction of trade exchanges between the two countries.

In this context, observers believe that betting on energy as a means of modifying political positions has shown its limitations, especially in light of the international transformations that have become governed by broader strategic considerations than circumstantial calculations related to the energy market.

Analyzes also indicate that Algeria sought to expand its energy presence through production projects and attracting international companies, but these trends faced internal challenges, including protests related to environmental concerns in a number of regions, which reflects the complexity of the balance between economic goals and social considerations.

On the other hand, identical indicators confirm the continued growth of international support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative, as a realistic framework for resolving the conflict, which limits the effectiveness of attempts to influence through energy tools, and pushes towards rearranging relations according to more pragmatic approaches.
