In a move that came after a wave of Arab criticism of its previous position, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced, yesterday, Sunday, that the Minister of Foreign AffairsAhmed AttafHe received the ambassadors of a number of Arab countries that were subjected to military attacks, at the request of the PresidentAbdel Majeed Tebboune.
The Algerian Foreign Ministry statement said that the meeting concerned representatives of Arab countries affected by the recent attacks, without naming the implementing party, in reference to the Iranian strikes that targeted sites within some Gulf countries in the context of the recent regional escalation.
A new statement after widespread controversy
During the meeting, Attaf expressed Algeria’s “solidarity” with the affected Arab countries, stressing his country’s rejection of any infringement on its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and reiterating the call to stop escalation and adopt dialogue as an option to resolve crises.
This move comes after the controversy that accompanied the first Algerian statement, which at the time merely expressed “concern” and called for “restraint,” without declaring a clear position of solidarity, which sparked criticism in Arab circles, especially in light of a number of Arab capitals declaring their explicit support for the Gulf countries that were bombed.
Avoid naming Iran
Despite modifying its diplomatic tone in the second statement and raising the ceiling of declared solidarity, Algeria was careful not to explicitly mention Iran as the party carrying out the attacks, limiting itself to the phrase “military attacks,” which observers considered a continuation of the cautious approach in dealing with the crisis.
Analysts believe that this method reflects Algeria’s desire to achieve a delicate balance between its regional relations, in light of its political relations with Tehran, in exchange for its endeavor to avoid any Arab isolation or misunderstanding in light of the escalating tensions in the region.
A complex regional context
This development comes in light of the rapid transformations taking place in the international arena, which puts a number of countries before delicate diplomatic choices, especially with regard to managing their relations with influential regional and international powers.
The recent Algerian position remains an indication of an attempt to contain criticism and reposition itself diplomatically, in a regional situation characterized by sensitivity and complexity.
