TripoliThe World Health Organization announced the launch of a new humanitarian health project aimed at enhancing health and psychological care services provided to Sudanese refugees and host communities in southern Libya, as part of efforts to respond to the growing humanitarian needs in the region.
The organization stated that the project, which extends overEight months, titled“Reducing morbidity and mortality rates among Sudanese refugees in Libya by improving access to basic health and psychological services”, supported byEuropean Union Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Office.
The project mainly targetsThe municipalities of Kufra and QatrunMobile medical teams comprising doctors in general medicine, gynecology, pediatrics, mental health and trauma, as well as community health workers, will be deployed to provide care in remote areas and hard-to-reach settlements.
The program also includes providing health awareness services, community follow-up, and supporting a number of health facilities to ensure that complex cases are referred to specialized care, with special attention paid to women, children, people with disabilities, those with chronic diseases, and the most vulnerable groups.
The organization’s statement quoted the head of the World Health Organization mission in Libya,Ahmed ZuwaitenHe said that Sudanese refugees in the south of the country still face great challenges in accessing basic health services, stressing that the project aims to deliver medical care directly to isolated areas, ensuring that no one is deprived of treatment.
The project will also work to strengthen the capabilities of local health authorities and emergency response teams, through training on early disease detection, infection prevention, mass casualty management, and first aid provision, which will contribute to raising the health system’s readiness to confront crises.
The World Health Organization confirmed that the initiative is based on its ongoing humanitarian programs inKufra MunicipalitySince July 2024, indicating that it will continue to coordinate with the Libyan authorities and humanitarian partners to ensure the provision of equitable and coordinated health services to refugees and host communities.
