Benghazi –The General Command announcedFor the Libyan National ArmyOn Tuesday, an agreement was reached with a delegation from the US Congress to establish a joint military operations room in the city of Sirte, which includes elements of the military forces in eastern and western Libya, in a step aimed at supporting the path of unifying the military institution and enhancing defense cooperation between the two sides.
The announcement came after the meeting of Deputy Commander-in-Chief Lieutenant General Saddam Haftar with an American delegation headed by Congressman Austin Scott, in the presence of Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Khaled Haftar and a number of military and political officials from both parties.
A statement by the General Command explained that the two sides also agreed that Libya would host the main part of the “Flintlock 2027” military exercise, in addition to working to establish a unified Libyan air command in coordination with the military leadership in the west of the country, and establishing a national center for air force training within the Air Academy in the city of Misrata.
The General Command confirmed that these steps come within the framework of efforts aimed at unifying the Libyan military institution and building a unified national army capable of protecting the country’s sovereignty and enhancing its security and stability, with the support of the United States.
In another context, Libyan-Italian relations witnessed development with the release of four Libyan citizens who had been detained in Italy for more than eleven years in connection with the case known in the media as the “football players case.”
The General Command in Benghazi announced the reception of athletes Tariq Al-Amami and Abdul Rahman Al-Barasi, stressing that their release came in direct coordination with the Italian authorities.
On the other hand, the National Unity Government and the Libyan Embassy in Rome said that the release of the four citizens came as a result of intensive diplomatic and legal follow-up, after completing the necessary procedures in coordination with the competent authorities in the two countries.
The case dates back to 2015, when the Italian authorities arrested four Libyans following the sinking of an irregular immigration boat, before issuing prison sentences against them, despite their confirmation that they were among the passengers and not part of human smuggling networks.
