Morocco –Morocco, represented by its Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Omar Zniber, assumed the presidency of the Conférence du désarmement, until next March 13, in a step that reflects the Kingdom’s increasing presence within the multilateral system.
The Conference on Disarmament is the only multilateral negotiating body affiliated with Nations unies charged with concluding international treaties in the field of disarmament. This presidency consolidates Morocco’s position as an actor engaged in serving multilateralism and promoting dialogue and collective security, in an international context characterized by increasing complexity.
This responsibility falls, according to official data, within the framework of the royal directives of Mohammed VI, which emphasize the priority of multilateral diplomatic action and support for initiatives aimed at establishing a world based on law, cooperation and consensual solutions to confront common challenges.
The holding of the conference this year comes in a delicate geopolitical context, characterized by escalating international tensions and deepening disputes between a number of member states, in addition to the decline in confidence-building measures and the continuation of arms races, which pose real challenges to the collective security system.
In this context, the Moroccan presidency intends to work to unify efforts, restore a climate of trust, and encourage a constructive and comprehensive dialogue that will enable the conference to carry out its negotiating tasks in an optimal manner, especially in light of the growing threats to international peace and security.
It is expected that this presidency will witness a prominent milestone represented by the organization of the high-level ministerial segment between 23 and 25 February, with the participation of about forty international figures, including foreign ministers and a number of senior officials, in addition to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, in an indication of the importance of advancing multilateral work in the field of disarmament.
Through this presidency, Morocco reaffirms its commitment to defending effective multilateralism, based on shared responsibility and political will, to serve the establishment of a just and lasting peace at the international level.
