Mauritania –Mauritania’s exports of liquefied natural gas recorded about 603 thousand tons during the third quarter of 2026, an increase of 16% compared to the same period in 2025, compared to a decline of more than 9% on a quarterly basis, according to data contained in a report on developments in Arab and international liquefied gas markets.

The numbers reveal a different path for exports since the beginning of the year, as they reached 703 thousand tons during the first quarter, before declining to 652 thousand tons in the second quarter, then to 603 thousand tons in the third quarter, which is the lowest quarterly level during the year 2026 according to the data received.

On a monthly level, exports reached 218 thousand tons in January, 232 thousand tons in February, and 253 thousand tons in March, which is the highest monthly level since the start of exports. It recorded 183 thousand tons in April, 245 thousand tons in May, 225 thousand tons in June, then 191 thousand tons in July, 223 thousand tons in August, and 189 thousand tons in September.

Mauritania’s total exports of liquefied gas during the first nine months of the year amounted to about 1.97 million tons, compared to 823 thousand tons during the same period in 2025, according to the same report. On the other hand, September recorded the first annual decline in exports since the start of shipments to global markets in early 2025, by 0.5%.

In terms of importing markets, China topped the list during the third quarter with imports amounting to 152 thousand tons, followed by Bangladesh with 135 thousand tons, then Italy with more than 122 thousand tons, and Egypt with 76 thousand tons, while other markets received a total of 119 thousand tons. China and Bangladesh combined accounted for about 48% of total exports during the same period.

China received two shipments during August and September, amounting to 76 thousand tons for each shipment, while imports from Bangladesh, which entered the list of Mauritanian gas importers for the first time in April 2026, were limited to a shipment that arrived in July. As for Italy, its imports recorded a decline of 14% compared to the third quarter of 2025, when they amounted to about 141 thousand tons, while Egypt imported one shipment during August weighing 76 thousand tons.

The launch of Mauritania’s liquefied gas exports is due to the start of commercial production from the “Torto Ahmeim Grand” field, shared with Senegal, at the beginning of 2025, with the gas being processed and liquefied through a floating facility whose current operational capacity reaches about 2.5 million tons annually.
