Mauritania –Mauritania has begun diplomatic moves to support the nomination of its former Foreign Minister, Ismail Ould Sheikh Ahmed, to fill the position of Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, according to what local media reported, citing informed sources.
According to circulating data, an official notification was sent to the General Secretariat of the organization containing the name of the Mauritanian candidate, in a step that reflects Nouakchott’s desire to run for this election within one of the most prominent multilateral bodies in the Islamic world. The same sources indicate that Mauritania is betting on the support of a number of member states, most notably the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which hosts the organization’s headquarters in Jeddah.
Ould Sheikh Ahmed is considered one of the diplomatic figures who has accumulated internal and international experience, as he previously held the portfolio of foreign affairs, and also held senior positions alongside Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Sheikh Ghazouani. At the international level, he held multiple tasks within the United Nations system, including roles related to mediation and humanitarian files in a number of hotspots of tension.
It should be noted that the Organization of Islamic Cooperation was established in 1969 with the aim of enhancing cooperation among member states, before adopting its current name in 2011, after it was known as the “Organization of the Islamic Conference.” The Secretary-General plays a pivotal role in coordinating the positions of member states and following up on the implementation of the decisions of summits and ministerial meetings.
Until now, the organization has not announced additional details regarding the deadlines for deciding this position, pending the completion of consultations between member states.
