Nouakchott –On Thursday, Mauritania and Senegal held a ministerial meeting in the capital, Nouakchott, to discuss ways to enhance cooperation in the joint gas project“The Great Ahmeem Turtle” (GTA)With a focus on maximizing the economic and social returns of the project, expanding the use of gas in electricity production and developing energy infrastructure.
The meeting was chaired by the Mauritanian Minister of Energy and OilMohamed Ould KhaledAnd his Senegalese counterpartHaj Abderrahmane DioufWith the participation of the delegations of the two ministries, technical presentations were made about the gas sector and the prospects for developing the joint project were discussed.
The Mauritanian Minister of Energy and Oil stressed that the meeting represents an opportunity to enhance the economic benefit from the “Turtle Ahmeem Al-Kabir” project, and to review opportunities for cooperation in the fields of electricity production using natural gas, and developing energy infrastructure, in light of the growing global demand for liquefied natural gas and the acceleration of transformation in the energy sector.
For his part, the Senegalese minister stressed the importance of continuing coordination between the two countries to find solutions that respond to the technical and economic requirements and timetable of the project, while preserving the sovereign interests of both Mauritania and Senegal.
The two sides also discussed various technical and organizational aspects related to the project, ensuring the implementation of contractual obligations and enhancing cooperation in exploiting shared gas resources, in addition to discussing projects related to developing gas networks and supporting energy security in the two countries.
The Mauritanian Ministry of Energy and Oil confirmed that the meeting embodies the continuation of the strategic partnership between Nouakchott and Dakar in the energy sector, and reflects the commitment of the two countries to the success of the “Turtle Ahmeem Al-Kabir” project, which is one of the largest liquefied natural gas projects in West Africa, and is relied upon to enhance government revenues and support development and energy sovereignty.
