A clear UN resolution: Washington confirms that the parties concerned with the Sahara conflict are unambiguously identified

Morocco –The Moroccan Sahara file returned to the forefront of international debate on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, following statements made by a senior American official that re-shed light on the nature of the parties involved in the conflict according to the UN reference.

In a media interview, Massad Boulos, the US President’s senior advisor for African and Middle Eastern affairs, confirmed that Security Council Resolution No. 2797, issued at the end of last October, explicitly identified the parties concerned with the Sahara file, noting that the UN text named Morocco, the Polisario Front, Algeria, and Mauritania among the relevant parties, considering that these parties are “concerned in one way or another” with the political track.

An international reference and a negotiating path This clarification comes in the context of the efforts led by the Security Council to revive the political process under the auspices of the United Nations, according to an approach that calls for a realistic, lasting political solution that is acceptable to the parties.

The American official also indicated that the US Embassy in Madrid will host meetings on February 8 and 9, without going into details, stressing the confidentiality of the discussions and their complications, within the framework of supporting the international path.

Different official positions

On the other hand, Algerian media quoted an official source confirming that his country considers itself a “neighboring country” participating as an observer, a position repeated in official Algerian discourse.

However, recent Security Council resolutions confirm the involvement of all concerned parties in the political process, which reflects an international trend towards addressing the conflict within a multilateral framework, with a clear international reference.

Constants of the Moroccan position

In various international forums, Morocco renews its adherence to the autonomy initiative as a political solution under Moroccan sovereignty, as it is a realistic platform that enjoys increasing support from a number of international partners.

Observers confirm that the recent developments reflect the continued interest of the major international powers in the Sahara issue, with the prospect of pushing towards a final political settlement within the framework of respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom and the resolutions of international legitimacy.
