Ghat –Torrential rains and torrential rains have returned to hit the regions of southwestern Libya, after the cities of Ghat and Tahala, which are close to the Algerian border, witnessed strong falls that caused the valleys to flow and a number of families to flee from low-lying areas, amid an official alert and renewed demands to establish sustainable water protection projects.
According to available data, the local authorities have not recorded any human losses so far, but material damage has affected a number of local facilities and structures, at a time when fears have escalated of a recurrence of the flood scenarios that the region has experienced over the past years.
Local officials reported that all families residing in the city of Tahala have left the threatened areas in a precautionary manner towards safer places, while emergency teams and competent authorities continue to follow developments in the field situation.
In light of the renewed crisis, the issue of dams and flood protection facilities has returned to the forefront of discussion, as local actors and civilians demand the speedy completion of water projects capable of reducing the dangers of recurring floods, especially in areas located on the paths of valleys coming from the Algerian highlands.
Those who follow Libyan affairs also believe that the recurrence of floods in the region reveals the need for permanent structural solutions, which include strengthening infrastructure, developing early warning systems, and constructing water facilities to reduce the human and material losses that recur with every rainy season.
On the other hand, the Libyan authorities declared a state of alert to support the affected areas, as aid and medical convoys were directed to monitor the situation and provide the necessary support to the residents affected by the recent weather fluctuations.
