Mauritania – My Press

Today, Thursday, April 16, 2026, the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott, witnessed security interventions to disperse a protest march organized by the anti-slavery “Ira” movement, in protest against the high prices of fuel and domestic gas, which resulted in the arrest of about 40 activists, according to data issued by the movement.

Al-Hassan Embarek, the media and political advisor to the movement’s president, explained that the detainees were arrested during the march, which also called for the release of activists and leaders affiliated with the movement, noting that they were transported via police cars to an unknown destination.

According to media sources, riot control forces intervened to disperse the protesters and prevent them from reaching the center of the capital, where they intended to head to Freedom Square near Parliament, to express their rejection of the rise in prices and the deterioration of purchasing power.

The same sources added that the security forces used batons and tear gas to disperse the demonstrators, after they tried to advance towards the main street from the vicinity of the Grand Market, chanting protest slogans against high prices and demanding the release of detainees.

For their part, the organizers of the march confirmed that their movement was peaceful, indicating their commitment to the predetermined path, while the authorities did not grant a license to organize this protest.

These developments come in the context of escalating social tensions against the backdrop of rising costs of living, amid increasing demands to improve economic and social conditions in the country.
