RabatMorocco and Spain strengthened their cooperation in managing the irregular migration file, after the authorities of the two countries agreed to intensify security and procedural coordination, while beginning the return of irregular migrants who were able to reach the occupied city of Ceuta during recent days.
The agreement stipulates the return of people who entered the city illegally, within the framework of direct coordination between the competent authorities in Rabat and Madrid, and in accordance with established legal procedures.
In the same context, the Spanish Ministry of the Interior confirmed, in an official statement, that cooperation between Morocco and Spain in the field of immigration management is characterized by “idealism,” noting that the two sides agreed to strengthen joint efforts to confront irregular migration flows, while reviewing and activating measures to return irregular arrivals to Ceuta as soon as possible.
The Ministry explained that migrant smuggling networks are exploiting some legal developments to encourage crossing attempts, especially among young people, stressing continued coordination between the security services in the two countries to reduce this phenomenon.
The Spanish Interior Minister, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, praised the efforts made by the Moroccan authorities, stressing that the interventions of the Moroccan security forces during the past days contributed to thwarting thousands of irregular migration attempts and saving many lives at sea.
The occupied city of Ceuta is experiencing increasing pressure at the reception center level, after the head of its local government, Juan Jesús Vivas, announced that the city is facing a “humanitarian and social emergency” as a result of the increasing numbers of arrivals in recent days.
